Everyone tells me to expect to get lost in Venice. I consider myself to have a pretty good sense of direction, but Florence and Rome have humbled me. I have to walk with a map in hand and locate myself every 5 minutes. I've often found myself facing a river that I thought I had left behind 10 minutes ago, or some such. Both cities are supposed to be child's play compared to Venice.
A the Piazza d' Popolo I stumbled upon a military parade of... nuns. About 5 thousand nuns (no hyperbole) marching in lockstep in front of a bandstand with... 5 thousand more nuns. I have photos to prove it. If Rome is the HQ of Catholicism, then Catholicism is a largely female organization. You see clergy and nuns on the streets constantly, but the nuns out number the men 10 to 1. The men may be at the top of the pyramid, but the women are the base.
maps.google.com simply can't handle venice. also, it is impotent in the face of italian street numbering systems... which make no sense, period. Technology that can't handle human madness ain't technology at all.
